Just one of my pet peeves (I have many)

Ok, I am not that old. Thirty seven, which in my opinion, is still a spring chicken. So why is it that I am so annoyed by text talking? I don't want to sound "un-hip", but I do not get talking this way. It makes no sense to me. I will admit, I use lol, omg, ttyl, r u- but that pretty much is the extent of it. Some people make complete (I use this loosely) sentences using this crazy "language".  I read things people post on facebook and messages and I litterally have to read some of them over and over again just to figure out what they are saying.
Who invented this code language? I often wonder if these kids, who all they know how to do is text talk, write their English papers this way? I actually found a paper a girl in Scottland wrote and turned in for an assignment. She wrote "My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we used 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3 :- kids FTF. ILNY, it's a gr8 plc." Huh???? This is like some foreign language to me.
 I guess this is just a sign of the times but geesh to turn it in on homework? I am absolutely not an English professor but thank God I at least know how to write out complete sentences and make sense (somewhat). I pity the English teachers, I certainly would not want to have your jobs!

By the way, here is the translation of the paper ..."My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York. It's a great place." Ahhh haaa, now I understand!
